  26.             The MELVYL catalog is a computer-based  library  catalog  of
  27.             over  7 million unique book titles representing more than 11
  28.             million holdings of all libraries in the nine-campus UC sys-
  29.             tem  and the California State Library.  The catalog contains
  30.             records of book and periodical (serial) holdings, and  other
  31.             materials  such  as  maps,  films, musical scores, and sound
  32.             recordings.  Collections strengths include agriculture,  dry
  33.             lands, oceanography, entomology, performing arts (especially
  34.             film and television), photography,  Californiana,  materials
  35.             on Mexico and Central America, 17th and 18th century British
  36.             literature, health sciences, science fiction, and many  oth-
  37.             ers.

  39.             The periodical file, containing  more  than  640,000  unique
  40.             titles  of newspapers, journals, proceedings, etc., includes
  41.             the holdings  of  Stanford  University,  the  University  of
  42.             Southern  California,  the  nineteen-campus California State
  43.             University system, and selected other libraries.

  45.             The MELVYL catalog also includes two article abstracting and
  46.             indexing  files-MEDLINE  and Current Contents.  Use of these
  47.             files, unlike the books and periodicals files, is restricted
  48.             to  the  UC community.  The MELVYL MEDLINE database contains
  49.             the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE  database,  which

  69.             file, from the Institute for  Scientific  Information,  con-
  70.             tains  citations  to  journals  in seven disciplines.  Other
  71.             databases include some IAC files and Inspec.

  73.             The "DLA Bulletin" and "Mynd of  the  MELVYL  Catalog",  two
  74.             publications  describing the online catalog and its develop-
  75.             ment and use, are also available online.  The MELVYL  Online
  76.             Catalog  also provides TELNET access to other remote library
  77.             systems.
